Jamie went back to his doctor today for a post-op appointment. His knee was very swollen and hot, so the doctor used a syringe to remove some excess fluid. He was really sore afterward from having his knee handled so much, but it relieved the throbbing a little. Dr. Seidman said the fluid was normal and everything looked good and gave him a referral to start physical therapy next week. The nurse practicioner told me his loss of appetite is most likely his body's reaction to the trauma of the surgery. But after his appointment, he ate a big dinner at Zaxby's so I feel better.
While Jamie is sore and getting around on the crutches has been a pain, the biggest annoyance for him has been a case a hiccups that will not quit. They started when he was in the recovery room sleeping off the anesthesia. If there's anything worse than that post-surgery anesthesia-induced wooziness, drowsiness, pain and nausea, it's post-surgery anesthesia-induced wooziness drowsiness, pain and nausea AND a horrible case of hiccups. The nurse at the hospital Tuesday afternoon said she has heard anesthesia can cause hiccups. Unfortunately, the nausea and lightheadedness have gone away as the anesthesia worked itself out of Jamie's systems. The hiccups have not. So for the past few days as Jamie has tried to rest and recover, he's been plagued by the worst case of hiccups known to man. We have tried every remedy I've ever heard of, but have had no success.
Any suggestions anyone?

Poor Jamie :-( !!!!!!! I can only think of is drinking through a wash cloth across the top of a cup of water, or a big TBSP. of sugar. Good luck!

Dad swears by a spoonful of sugar followed by a big gulp of water, but I DO remember being a teenager and being at Aunt Mary and Uncle Lou's house for a Christmas visit. Uncle Lou had been hiccuping for days and trying everything. My cousins finally called the hospital who suggested they bring him in. He was given a shot (of what??) to make the hiccups go away. Hope Jamie's go away on there own!!!

Funny you should mention the shot, because when I first Googled "hiccups" and "anesthesia" I got a ton of articles on anesthesia as a treatment for hiccups. After I put in "hiccups after surgery" I got a ton of articles saying it's common and that for some people they last for a week or more. Ugh
Luckily for Jamie I also got an article that offered THE cure for hiccups. And it worked! To my knowledge, he has not gotten them since last night.
Try using steel wool to rip open all of the blisters, and then pour bleach into the fresh wounds. Works like a charm.

zaxby's!! julio, tim, & i stopped there during our road trip to GA for your wedding. not too long ago we were talking about that trip and none of us could remember the name of that place! what a relief to finally know.
So I'm way late in reading this but I'll comment anyway. Whenever I get the hiccups (which I find incredibly painful) George holds my breath until I "tap out" then he keeps holding it a little while longer. It scares the, well hiccups,out of me. It's psycho but it works.
